Lifeguard - Ripped and Torn (Matador Records, 2025)

Издаден на 6 јуни, 2025, “Ripped and Torn” e студиски албум на американскиот инди-рок бенд Lifeguard. Класифицирано како инди-рок, но, повеќе експериментален микс на пост-панк, денс, како и многу силни бубњеви, брзи и мелодични гитара и бас, класифицирајќи го овој албум само како инди-рок не ја врши работата.
Lifeguard претставува склоп од басистот и вокалист Ашер Кејс, тапанарот и перкусионист Исак Ловенштајн и гитаристот и вокалист Каи Слејтер, базирани во Чикаго, Илинои. There is nothing, nothing, nothing better than a freshly released album that grabs you with its sound from the first minute. Released on June 6, 2025, “Ripped and Torn” is a studio album by American indie rock band Lifeguard. Classified as indie rock, but a more experimental mix of post-punk, dance, as well as powerful drums, fast and melodic guitar and bass, classifying this album as indie rock alone doesn’t get the job done.
Lifeguard is a band consisting of bassist and vocalist Asher Case, drummer and percussionist Isaac Lowenstein, and guitarist and vocalist Kai Slater, based in Chicago, Illinois. The trio is very active in their hometown music scene in Chicago, Asher who was previously part of the band Neptune’s Core, Isaac who played percussion for his sister Penelope’s band Horsegirl, and Kai, who is also part of his other band, Dwaal Troup, along with these two bands, he also organizes the Hallogalo Fest in Chicago, which is a festival that gives a platform to young and upandcoming bands emerging from the Chicago scene.
In addition to this album, they have released several EPs, including In Silence (2020, self-released), Crowd Can Talk (2022, Born Yesterday), and Dressed in Trenches (2023, Matador Records). Before releasing “Ripped and Torn,” Lifeguard cemented their sound and place in the Chicago music scene with their debut album “Dive” (an album recorded in 24 hours, or rather 14 hours in their words), which was released in 2020.
Upon first listen, it definitely throws you into a film about a live gig in someone's basement where your ears are ringing, and people are just waiting for someone to decide to start a mosh pit, even at times you think you're listening to a live improvisation. If that doesn't do it for you, Lifeguard uses these words to explain their "Ripped and Torn".
Depending on what you hear first, Lifeguard definitely experiments from project to project. “Ripped and Torn” which has a more punkish charm, a lot of repetition, and even at times electronic effects, which will scratch your brain in a nice way, plays with its tracks to the maximum. There is the moment of starting the tracks off with a riff-based intro (“France And”, “Like You’ll Lose” and others), which highlights Kai’s eccentric guitar, and together with the other instrumentals and vocals, they complement each other. The thing I believe that catches the attention of the listeners is the heavy use of feedback and electronic sound, as an addition to the already energetic sound of the track. Some of the tracks, like “Me and My Flashes” and “Under Your Reach”, create a special sound of tension, which sounds halfway between a broken amp and an overloaded synthesizer. Lots of distortion, which creates a raw, vivid sense of electronic pulse, and a sound that tries to break through from all sides, through the amp, through the mixer, through the instruments themselves.
This compilation of a fast and energetic style makes "Ripped and Torn" an album that not only represents a cult project by Lifeguard but also a solid introduction to the musical abilities and creative drive of this young trio.
